Movie Review: Up In The Air

p In The Air
Directed by Jason Reitman
Starring George Clooney, Jason Bateman, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick
Release date: December 4, 2009 (limited)

“Everywhere I travel, tiny life. Single-serving sugar, single-serving cream, single pat of butter. The microwave Cordon Bleu hobby kit. Shampoo-conditioner combos, sample-packaged mouthwash, tiny bars of soap. The people I meet on each flight? They’re single-serving friends.”
– Narrator from Fight Club

“Few people on this planet know what it is to be truly despised. Can you blame them? I earn a living fronting an organization that kills 1200 people a day.”
– Nick Naylor from Thank You For Smoking

“Make no mistake your relationships are the heaviest components in your life. All those negotiations and arguments and secrets, the compromises. The slower we move the faster we die. Make no mistake, moving is living. Some animals were meant to carry each other to live symbiotically over a lifetime. Star crossed lovers, monogamous swans. We are not swans. We are sharks.”
– Ryan Bingham from Up In The Air

Up In The Air: Life In The Descent

The beauty of getting lost at the movies is that it allows us to visit worlds vastly different from our own. It is the greatest exercise in being a fly on the wall. It is the ultimate act of voyeurism. Going to the movies, listening to an album or reading a book are some of the greatest trips we will ever take in our lives. Jason Reitman’s Up In The Air is one of those

Hockey star’s parents watch him offer ring

OTTAWA — Singer Carrie Underwood and Ottawa Senators forward Mike Fisher can start making wedding plans now that their engagement is official.

Fisher confirmed Monday after the team’s morning skate at Scotiabank Place that he gave Underwood a ring Sunday and that they plan to marry. The couple have dated for more than a year and rumours were persistent for a month that they would get engaged at Christmas.

“It’s true,” said Fisher. “We’re both obviously excited and very happy and so, exciting times for sure,” said Fisher, who had been reluctant to speak about the relationship. A date has not been set for the wedding.

It’s believed Fisher, 29, gave Underwood, 26, the ring at his West Carleton home Sunday with his parents in attendance. Underwood had been in Ottawa for a few days and watched Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Wild, where Fisher recorded his 300th NHL career point in the team’s 4-1 win.

While news of the couple’s engagement was certainly a hot topic Monday, Fisher and Underwood went about their own business. Fisher was with his teammates at his regular morning skate at Scotiabank Place, preparing for Monday night’s game against Boston.

Meanwhile, Underwood visited Tony Greco’s fitness studio in Kanata and stayed for about an hour. She arrived by herself and staff confirmed she worked out.

The couple had made a tentative lunch reservation Monday at Fratelli’s restaurant in Kanata, but were a no-show.

Fans at the Senators’ game were clearly delighted with the news. When someone held a sign up late in the first period that said ‘Congratulations, Mike and Carrie,’ they were met with applause.

Jacquie Wilson, of Ottawa, said that the pair “makes a nice couple. It’s great that they are together,” said Wilson.

Debbie Pilon, of Stittsville, echoed the widely felt sentiment. “I think she is a sweet girl. I watched her special on TV last night. I’m a fan,” said Pilon.

Christmas Cookie Recipe: Sugar Cookies

A: Reindeer, also called Caribou, are members of the deer family. Santa chose reindeer to pull his sleigh through the air on Christmas Eve for three very practical reasons. First, their natural habitat is cold northern climates near the North Pole, including Alaska, Canada, Russia, and Scandinavia. Second, reindeer were first domesticated about 2,000 years ago, just in time for the first Christmas. Finally, and most importantly, reindeer are excellent swimmers. Their well developed muscles used for swimming are well suited for flying through the air.

The vast majority of reindeer seem unable to fly. As far as we can tell, those with the ability have only been seen flying between dusk on Christmas Eve and dawn of Christmas morning. We are able to determine this through analysis of detailed records kept by NORAD, the North American Aerospace Command. NORAD is a military intelligence agency of the United States and Canadian government that monitors the air space over North America. Since 1955, NORAD has been tracking flying reindeer through military satellites and radar. To track the flight of reindeer for yourself, visit the NORAD Santa tracking web page today and tonight at http://www.NORADSanta.org.

With all we know about these fascinating creatures, modern veterinary science has been unable to discern exactly how these large animals are able to get off the ground. We are left to conclude it must be one of the mysteries of creation and a very special part of the miracle of Christmas.

Robin Thicke back to lighthearted sound

Robin Thicke's sound on "Sex Therapy" is playful and fun — a nearly 180-degree directional change from the platinum-selling singer's previous release, "Something Else."

Fans could appreciate the Grammy-Award-winning songwriter's earlier attention to racism and melting ice caps on the beautiful "Dreamworld." But listeners will find that Thicke has returned to the light-hearted sound of his sophomore disc, "The Evolution of Robin Thicke."

Much like the breezy 2006 single "Lost Without U," Thicke applies his signature falsetto to the bossa nova-influenced "Jus Right."

There's a bit of heavy breathing and heavier bass on title track "Sex Therapy." However, unlike the stuff from younger R&B crooners jockeying for attention with their brassiest lyrics, Thicke's clean production and simple delivery make his bedroom ballads as sophisticated as they are sexy.

And when the gentleman in the black suit does switch up his style, he partners with heavyweight Jay-Z, who joins Thicke to paint a picture of beaches and yachts in France's Saint-Tropez on "meiple'."

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: It's not exactly New Jack Swing, but producer Teddy Riley breaks out the horns to give "It's in the Mornin," featuring Snoop Dogg, just the right amount of zing.

Joe Not Gonna Finish

Can comity and comedy coexist in the U.S. Senate? This important question presented itself Thursday during the debate over health care. Speaking on the floor of the Senate, Joe Lieberman asked to extend his remarks beyond the 10 minutes he'd been allotted. In a body known for speechmaking, this is like requesting air. It's the kind of request normally acceded to "without objection." But Al Franken, the freshman senator from Minnesota, sitting in as presiding officer of the Senate, told the four-term senator from Connecticut that he could not. "In my capacity as senator from Minnesota, I object," said Franken. Despite his background as a former cast member of Saturday Night Live, Franken was being serious. He did, however, give the universal palms-up gesture, suggesting the matter was out of his hands.

This became a thing.

John McCain, who built a reputation on breaking ranks, was outraged at the breach. "I've been around here 20-some years. First time I've ever seen a member denied an extra minute or two to finish his remarks," he said. "I just haven't seen it before myself. And I don't like it. And I think it harms the comity of the Senate not to allow one of our members at least a minute." (McCain, it turns out was forgetting his own effort, in 2002, to do exactly what Franken was doing.)

LeAnn Rimes' Husband Files For Divorce

Court records show LeAnn Rimes' husband Deane Sheremet has officially filed for divorce. The couple announced a divorce was in the works in September, but no paperwork had been filed. Court records show Sheremet filed in Los Angeles on Thursday. The couple were married in February 2002 and have no children together. The filing cites "irreconcilable differences" for the breakup, and Rimes has been linked with TV-movie co-star Eddie Cibrian for months. Cibrian filed for divorce from his wife of eight years in August. Sheremet is seeking spousal support and to have his attorney's fees paid by Rimes, who is a country singer and actress. The couple have apparently already worked out how to divide their property.
